A TENTACLE'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY: TOWEL DAY

25 May 2012
- 42 -

2001  -
Today is Towel Day, in memory of science-fiction author, Douglas Adams.

Adams is best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a science-fiction comedy radio series first pitched to BBC Radio 4 in 1977. The series led to Adams expanding the concept as a novel, and for adaptation to television. Today, 25 May, is unofficially Towel Day, celebrating Adams's life and his work in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was first set two weeks after Adams's death on 11 May 2001.

The original quotation that explained the importance of towels is found in Chapter 3 of Adams' work The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

SCHIMMELPENNINCK

17 May 2012
- DUTCH CIGARS -

On this day in 1848, Earl Schimmelpenninck resigned (also, the nicest brand of Dutch Cigars).

Gerrit, Count Schimmelpenninck (25 February 1794, Amsterdam – 4 October 1863, Arnhem) was a Dutch businessman and statesman, whose views ranged from liberal to conservative. He was the son of Grand Pensionary Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck and a member of the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlands Hervormde kerk). .
After other functions, among which chief of the Nederlandsche Handel-maatschappij, he became head of secretary in Saint-Petersburg and later in London. .
The primary reason of William II to get him to the Netherlands was to keep Thorbecke out of the Council of Ministers. In March 1848 he became Chairman of the Council of Ministers, holding the ministerial offices of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance. His proposal to design a Constitution following British model, which would imply that the Senate could not be dissolved by the King, was rejected by the other ministers. He tendered his resignation on 14 May 1848.

3 May 2012

On this day in 1978 the first every Spam email was sent.

The first known email spam message was sent out by Gary Thuerk, a marketer for the Digital Equipment Corporation. On 3 May 1978, Thuerk sent out a marketing email on the DECSYSTEM-20 family of computers to 400 of the 2600 people on ARPAnet. Although the governing authorities responded quickly, denouncing such unwarranted marketing, the interest shown by a few of the recipients was sufficient for the concept to be attempted again - and thus was born spam.
